The backbone of Kannur is its agriculture, fisheries and other related industries, upon which a majority of its population depend onfor their livelihood. Paddy, coconut, pepper, cashew, tapioca and arecanut grow abundantly in this area, along with plantation crops like rubber. The Pepper Research Centre at Panniyur, the Central State Farm at Aralam and the Sugarcane Research Institute at Kannur contribute to the research and development of various crops in the agriculture sector.
